Homemade Face Masks

Homemade face masks are an inexpensive and fun solution to all kinds of skin issues. There are homemade face masks to clear the complexion, homemade face masks to tighten the pores, homemade face masks to moisturize skin, and brightening homemade face masks, all of which can be made with ingredients found easily around the house.

Two of the best homemade face masks for clearing the complexion are the aspirin mask and the honey/lemon mask. For the aspirin mask, take 6 uncoated aspirin (the cheap store-brand kind), crush and mix with a teaspoon of water. Cover the entire face with this mixture (if you have trouble getting it to stick you can also add in a sticky base by mixing it with a preexisting peel-off mask) and leave on for half an hour. When you’re ready to rinse it off, remove it by gently rubbing in a circular motion with a wash cloth. Using this mask weekly will clear up acne in a couple weeks.

To make the honey/lemon face mask, take a tablespoon full of honey and mix with a teaspoon of lemon. Apply the mask over the entire face and leave on for fifteen minutes. It may be difficult to remove so rinse several times if necessary.

Homemade face masks to tighten the pores include clay masks and egg white masks. Both of these are useful before a night out on the town; egg whites give an instant face lift effect and clay masks will absorb shine if you have oily skin. The best clay mask recommended by models, believe it or not, is 100% natural clay kitty litter! You can buy this at a natural foods grocery store such as Whole Foods, and make sure to choose an unscented version. Mix the kitty litter with water and cover the face in the mixture. Leave on until the clay dries and then rinse off. This is a very economical homemade face mask because the sack of kitty litter will last well over a year with weekly treatments.

Egg white masks are even simpler; separate the white of one egg from the yolk, beat it with a fork and then apply to the face for 15 minutes.

Moisturizing homemade face masks include avocado, Crisco and cucumber/yogurt. To make an avocado face mask, take half of a very ripe avocado, mash it with a fork and apply to the face. Ten minutes is usually sufficient time for this treatment. A Crisco mask merely requires applying Crisco to the face directly from the can and leaving it there for ten to fifteen minutes.

For the cucumber/yogurt face mask, place half a cucumber and one tablespoon of yogurt in a blender to mix thoroughly. Apply to the face and leave on for 20 minutes. Other fruits can be substituted for the cucumber, including blueberry, bananas and peach.

A honey/milk face mask is the best homemade face mask for brightening skin. Mix 3 tablespoons of honey with one of milk and apply to the face. Leave on for 15 minutes. This mask may require several rinses to get off.
