Skills of Writing

Writing skill is a bundle of complex sub skills which are essential for the purpose of standard writing.

The skills include the folowing

* Write the letters of the alphabet at a reasonable speed with proper spacing and clarity.

* Spell the words correctly.

* Use appropriate punctuation marks.

* Use the style and register the appropriate for the subject matter and the audience.

1. The teacher should guide the students to master the elementary mechanics of writing work viz. handwriting, spellings, capilization, punctuations, word order and sentence constructions.

2. The teacher should train the students to present his information in a format acceptable for the occasion, be that informal or forma letters, or a report, or an article for publication.

3. The grammar teaching done by the teacher should be relevant to the needs of composition.

4. The student's written work should be done be gone through by the teacher. This will enable him to asses the student's level of achievement and prepare for the tasks ahead.

5. The teacher should take the practical steps to remedy the weaknesses in writing, generally seen in a composition.

6. The main cure for the weaknesses is reading contemporary English. The student should be made to realize the good writer is a good reader.

7. The teacher best technique for grammatical fault is intensive drilling oral drilling and then written exercise.
