Essential oils have long been used to help with emotional and even physical ailments. They are highly concentrated plant constituents rather than actual oil. So think of it this way – when you have a headache you take aspirin. Aspirin was traditionally made with the plant willow bark for it’s medical properties. It’s the same concept with using essential oils.

A few words of caution however. Essential oils like many other holistic remedies do not replace your doctor or their instructions. But you can use them to supplement treatment. Also, it is imperative that you only purchase 100 percent essential oil to avoid any synthetic chemicals (it will say it on the bottle). Finally, since they are so concentrated it is recommended that you dilute most essential oils with water to be safe. Below you will find some common uses for different essential oils.

 

Sleep and relaxation

 

Essential oils have been used for centuries to help people relax and sleep – particularly lavender oil. Simply sprinkle some on your pillow or put a few drops in your hands, rub them together, and take a good whiff.

If you want to go the extra mile, many holistic healers also believe you can use this scent to clear negative energies from the room. Put a few drops in water, dip a handkerchief in it, and flick your wrist to sprinkle the room.

 

Cleaning

 

It’s no secret that traditional cleaning products expose us to a lot of harmful chemicals. Fortunately, many essential oils are high in anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties. You can easily use peppermint, eucalyptus, lemon, grapefruit, lavender, ginger, rosemary, and tea tree to make a lot of home cleaning remedies.

 

Healing the skin

 

Since essential oils are absorbed so well by the body, many essential oils can be used in healing skin irritations, help with cuts, and moisturize. The best part is that they do not accumulate in your body overtime, they just offer up the plant’s healing properties.

 

Boost your mood

 

Essential oils have been used for centuries to help boost someone’s mood. For instance, peppermint and lemon are known to pep you up while clary sage helps with PMS. Rosemary is also very well known for boosting concentration and brain function. There are hundreds of different kinds of essential oils and they all have their respective properties to help with physical and emotional healing. Please make sure to read all labels before using these guys – they are very beneficial but sometimes they are potent!
