Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin is the most common form of the drug name Lipitor. It is used in conjunction with a healthy diet to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL, “bad” cholesterol) and triglyceride (a type of fat) in the blood levels and raises high levels of lipoprotein (HDL, “good” cholesterol levels).
This medicine is also given to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It can also help someone with a heart attack or someone at risk of a heart attack.
Atorvastatin belongs to a class of drugs called statins. It works by reducing the production of cholesterol in your body.

What is the most important information I need to know about Lipitor (Atorvastatin)?
You should not use atorvastatin if you have an allergy, or if you have liver disease.
Do not use if you are pregnant. This drug can harm the unborn baby. Use effective birth control contraceptives. Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant.
Do not breastfeed while taking atorvastatin.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had this:
Liver problems;
muscle pain or weakness;
kidney disease;
diabetes;
thyroid disease; or
if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.
Atorvastatin can cause muscle damage, which can lead to kidney failure. This often happens in women, the elderly, or people with kidney disease or hypothyroidism.
Atorvastatin is not approved for use by anyone under 10 years of age.
