Communication skills

Communication are consists of three skills that are LISTENING, SPEAKING AND READING.
Here I will let you know some strategies to teach these important skills to the students. 


Strategies to teach Listening skills

1. Understand conversation of average tempo lectures and news.
2. Get sense of what an educated native says when he speaks carefully and speaking simply on a general subject to develop the listening skills.
3. A special type of dictation exercise where pupils are required to fill gaps may be used to attract pupils attention to a particular feature of language.
4. Students should be given pre-listening activities to activate their schematic knowledge. 
5. Ample listening practices should be provided. This can be done with the help of recordings.
6. Ear training, which means training, the students in listening to good and simple English.
7. Dictation exercises can be used to train pupils ears.
8. Teacher's voice is the best aid to develop listening. Thus the teacher's own pronunciation should be accurate. 
9. The teacher also has to associate with its meaning. 
10. The teacher should regularly conduct listening tasks such as 
       * Listening to talks lectures announcements 
       * Participation in Seminars, discussions.
       * Participation in telephonic conversations 
       * Listening to news broadcasts, music, commentaries etc.
       * Watching appropriate English films and TV programmes.
11. Students should be taught to formulate responses.
12. Students should learn to extract the essential information while listening. 

Speaking Skills 
Strategies to teach speaking Skills

1. The teacher can provide speech opportunities such as asking and answering questions, participating in conversation.
 2. Discussing, expressing reactions to certain existing issues and so on.
3. The teacher can potentially offer students spoken text samples from single sentences to scripted dialogues to completely natural speech.
4.  Can suggest conversational situations, enabling learners to practice expressions such as conversational openings, closing and evaluative follow ups.
5. The students can enact mini plays to develop voice quality, intonation, eye movement, mime and gestures.
6. Must see that the children develop accurate pronunciation of English sounds.
7.  Most important the teacher instill confidence in students to say what he wants. This calls for considerable preparation and creative thought on the part of the teacher.



Strategies to teach Reading

1. Exercises should be provided to improve the reading rate as all the important study skills require quick, efficient and imaginative reading.
2. The teacher should guide the students to comprehend the patterns of relationship between words and their meanings.
3. The teacher should develop the study skills such as skimming, scanning, recording and revising. A good student reader makes a survey at first, looks out for specific information and formulates the questions.
4. The students should be encourages to read copiously.
5. Training in reading is easy to give. It is very good exercise for student to find out a particular news item in a newspaper and tell the teacher what it is.
